Mauricio Limón de León’s work underlines the tension between conceptual frameworks – be they social conventions and norms or artistic methodologies – and human impulses and desires. The work shows how these frameworks and contracts both direct and attempt to control, contain or harvest the impulses, while at the same time provide the grounds for perversion or dissent that further becomes a source for pleasure.

This project presents a fragmentation of structures that shape fantasies and desires (and perhaps even madness), inside containers of comfort. Based on the artist’s research in theories of sexuality and power, the work creates an environment that points to domesticity and/or privacy, but which is unsettled by the dynamics between the objects, symbols and references on display. These abstract and geometrical genitalia bring to mind the pornographic dissection of organs of pleasure in service of the image industry. But Limón de León’s work further attempts to uncouple the imaginary from the aforementioned image, and opens it up to other possibilities and fantasies that the prescribed normative and banalized actions and gestures fail to contain.
